Uncovering The Levant

Arabic Literature

Posted in News & Random Thoughts by mikelowrey on March 3, 2010

Recently I have been trying to find some Arabic literature that has been translated into English that goes beyond the normal One Thousand and One Nights. A quick search and I have stumbled onto this fantastic resource maintained by M. Lynx Qualey which contains an up to date record of Arabic literature that has been translated into English.

FYI, best things I’ve read lately:

Sonallah Ibrahim’s /Stealth/, out last month from Aflame Books.
Elias Khoury’s /Yalo/, out 2009 Quercus (I suggest the Humphrey Davies translation)
    Elias Khoury’s /White Masks/, out April 2010 from Archipelago

And, for those with an interest in Egypt, it’s not tremendously literary, but great fun: Khaled al-Khamissi’s /Taxi/, out 2008 from Aflame.

Anyhow, that’s what springs to mind.

    M,

As per your note on the lonely planet website … if you run into your insurance provider can you mail me.

    Thanks

      Hello,

Sorry for the late reply. I found my insurance provider. I got it off a website called Money Saving Expert! Hope that helps.
